The Final Project for a Kitchener Fixer Upper.
THe Final Project for a Kitchener fixer upper.
What was unfinished business 47 years ago is now a completely redone home that has been well-loved.
From start to finished. Following a series of renovations to what was once a fixer-upper, David and Pauline Schmidt couldn't be happier with what they believe will be the final renovation to their home.
The retired couple has been married for 50 years and together they have two married daughters and four grandchildren. Forty-seven years ago, they purchased their Kitchener home, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom bungalow built in 1953.
When David and Pauline bought their house, they understood it was going to take some work to make it into a home they could raise a family in. From leaky pipes to wallpaper that was partially ripping off and unwanted guests such as squirrels and fleas, the house was a true fixer-upper. David started doing projects himself and with the help of a few contractors along the way, room by room, they made it into a well-loved home.
When they started thinking about re-doing their basement, it was not something David was looking forward to. David and Pauline had worked with Way-Mar back in 2010, installing new windows and interior doors. So, when it came time for the basement renovation, they called Way-Mar Project Manager Paul Fretz first. Paul came over, discussed the renovation with them, and gave them a quote. After receiving that quote from Way-Mar, they did not look around anymore. They were happy.
The entire renovation process went smoothly. There were never too many people in the house at once, so no one was bumping into each other. Suggestions were made to better the value of the renovations, which David appreciated. “There were suggestions galore, and they were so nice about it," he said. No matter the issue, the Way-Mar team always had a solution and was willing to explain right down to the tiniest detail. David and Pauline put their trust in the workers, and it paid off.
The Schmidts have only positive reviews when it comes to their basement renovations. “I can’t say enough about Way-Mar. They were just a wonderful company to deal with," David said. Friendly workers kept the space clean throughout the process, making sure at the end of each day that there was no extra mess, which the couple appreciated. Attention to detail was another thing that David and Pauline pointed out when reflecting on the project. They recalled how Fretz did a final walkthrough to make sure that the renovation was exactly to their liking, being very thorough and taking time to look over everything.
The bedroom, closet, and living room are all highlights of the basement renovation for the Schmidts, who are proud of the work that has been done and only wished they had done it sooner. Now that the renovations are complete, they say the space is used much more. The comfortable basement living room is where they spend much of their time when family visits.
The basement was completed in 2021 and marks the completion of the renovations to their fixer-upper.
